Open letter regarding the genocide in the Gaza Strip
Members of Romanian cultural and artistic community denounce the genocide, ecocide and cultural genocide&ask the Romanian authorities to take a firm stand the actions of the State of Israel
To:
The President of Romania, Mr Nicușor Dan
The Acting Prime Minister of Romania, Mr Cătălin Predoiu
The Acting Minister of Culture, Ms Natalia-Elena Intotero
The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Emil Hurezeanu
We, representatives of the cultural and artistic community in Romania, cultural organisations, and workers in culture, art and journalism, denounce in this open letter the genocide, ecocide and cultural genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, as well as the complicity of the Romanian authorities in this humanitarian disaster.
One year and six months after the State of Israel and its army subjected the civilian population of the Gaza Strip to a massacre targeting schools, hospitals, refugee camps, doctors and journalists, the toll of horrors stands at over 60,000 confirmed dead, over 100,000 wounded or maimed, and the real number of dead is estimated to be much higher. During this time, the entire territory of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to ruins by uninterrupted bombing.
Palestinian children account for a third of the deaths recorded to date. They are burned alive, maimed in bomb attacks, shot in the head, starved to death. Every 20 minutes, the Israeli army kills or injures a child. Save the Children has reported that 10 children are losing one or more limbs in Gaza every day. For the first time in human history, humanitarian organisations have created a special term to refer to the alarming number of injured and orphaned children in the Gaza Strip: Injured Child with No Surviving Family. These elements are just some of the reasons why the Israeli army's attacks on the Gaza Strip have been dubbed “a war against children”.
In the face of destruction on such a scale, any attempt to rank human losses becomes cynical, but from our position as people of culture, we feel the need to stand in solidarity with the artists, teachers, film directors, poets, writers and journalists who have been killed in Gaza or who are struggling to survive alongside their families in conditions of starvation imposed by the Israeli blockade, total lack of access to health services and drinking water, and the impossibility of leading a normal life amid the rubble and under perpetual siege.
The Palestinian Ministry of Culture reports that between 7 October 2023 and 4 February 2025, over 45 Palestinian cultural figures were killed. Among them are poet and literature professor Refaat Alareer, writer Inas Saqqa, a pioneer in children's art who organised theatre workshops for children in Gaza, and Hiba Abu Nada, a poet and novelist who died alongside her son, to name but a few. Like many other civilian victims of the massacre, Palestinian cultural figures met their end alongside their children or other family members under bombs dropped on their homes or refugee camps where they were trying to survive in indescribable conditions, in terror.
We must also point out that the humanitarian disaster in Gaza is compounded by the destruction of Palestinian cultural heritage in all its dimensions, both in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and that the assault on the collective memory linked to the historical identity of the Palestinian people is not accidental but systematic: shortly after 7 October, all libraries, museums and universities in the Gaza Strip became prime targets for bombing.
As can be seen in the exhibition “Treasures saved from Gaza – 5,000 years of history”, hosted until 2 November this year by the prestigious Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, historical remains and sites dating back thousands of years, belonging to the universal cultural heritage, were systematically destroyed by the Israeli army's attack on the Gaza Strip. The ancient port of Blakhiya, the Mukheitim funerary complex, and the monastic complex of Saint Hilarion are just a few of the structures and remains of historical and cultural value, many of which are classified as UNESCO sites.
The indiscriminate war crimes committed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip documented to date have not only resulted in the mass extermination of the population, but also in an attempt to erase the local historical and cultural identity from universal memory. A port and refuge for ships arriving here from all corners of the world, a natural border between Egypt and Asia, a point of convergence for caravan routes from Africa, Arabia and India, this strip of land had a rich past, and its built heritage bore witness to the passage of Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman and Ottoman civilisations through the area. Therefore, reducing this history of over 5,000 years to ruins and rubble is a cultural crime and a problem that concerns the heritage of all humanity.
We call on the Romanian authorities and representatives to take a firm stand against the genocide, ecocide and cultural genocide committed by the State of Israel. We call on them to unequivocally denounce the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli army in the Palestinian territories.
We call on the Romanian authorities to make Romania's trade, cultural and diplomatic relations with the State of Israel conditional on compliance with international law and, where these are not respected – as is clearly the case at present – to suspend them, especially in areas related to military technology research and production.
We call on the Romanian authorities to request EU sanctions against the State of Israel and the Israeli authorities, as well as the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which contains strict clauses on respect for human rights. We call on the Romanian authorities to demand the release of all hostages – Palestinians and Israelis – who are being held illegally or arbitrarily, including minors, in prisons, underground tunnels, camps and torture centres such as Sde Teiman.
We call on the Romanian authorities to take a firm stand against the policy of occupation and colonisation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which only fuels the cycle of violence.
Only accurate and unbiased reporting in the Romanian media and a firm stance by the authorities in Bucharest against the genocide committed by Israel can stop the alarming rise in anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and the wave of extremism sweeping across Europe. Only an honest policy geared towards the protection of human rights and civilians and a clear distinction from the actions of the far-right government led by Benjamin Netanyahu can counteract these phenomena fuelled by misinformation and ambiguity regarding the application or violation of international norms, rules and conventions.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is indeed deliberately caused by Israel, but the responsibility lies with all of us for Romania's direct or indirect participation in financing and supporting the Israeli machine of mass extermination. The civilians in the Gaza Strip, who are subjected to a policy of starvation, forced displacement and extermination, are waiting for a response from the international community in line with the urgency of the situation. In the absence of such a response, we are all complicit in what most historians and researchers in the field, including Israelis (Melanie O'Brien, Uğur Ümit Üngör, William Schabas, Raz Segal, Lee Mordechai, Omer Bartov, Amos Goldberg and many others), unequivocally call genocide. Our conscience compels us to reject this odious complicity and to declare loud and clear that these barbaric and sadistic attacks on human life and dignity cannot be carried out in our name!
